In 1981, a concerned group of private citizens and community leaders established the Orangewood Children's Foundation as a 501(c)3 nonprofit and raised more than $8 million towards the construction of the
Orangewood Children's Home (now called the Orangewood Children & Family Center). The volunteer-driven effort continued when the Foundation produced an additional $3.2 million for the subsequent expansion of the Home in 1992. Eighty percent of these funds were raised through donations from the private sector.
Ongoing special projects funded by Orangewood Children's Foundation
help to keep facilities at the Orangewood Children & Family
Center in peak operating condition. The Foundation continues to
support the Center and its young occupants, providing a wide range
of programs, activities, equipment, supplies and necessities for
the children who reside there. In addition, several hundred volunteers
provide hands-on involvement and activities for the children at
the Center, supporting the Foundation's efforts through the generous
donation of their time and talent.
Orangewood Children's Foundation is governed by a volunteer
Board of Directors comprised of more than 30 prominent business and community leaders.
Chief Executive Officer, Cal Winslow, provides the leadership
that sustains the organization. Winslow has been with the Foundation
since 2003, serving as the Chief Development Officer until a promotion
to CEO in July 2007. With an extensive background in the field
of children's issues and in the non-profit sector, Winslow oversees
the Foundation's highly successful programs and provides guidance
and direction to its staff and volunteers.
Two self-directed volunteer auxiliaries,
44 Women for Children and
Orangewood PALS (Providing Assistance, Love and Support), devote themselves to supporting the Foundation's programs for children, fundraising, public awareness and special event activities.
