Advanced Studies is a scholarship program for
former foster youth who have received a college degree and want
to pursue advanced studies, and have a current or past connection
to Orangewood Children’s Foundation.
The Advanced Studies program came about through the situation
of one dynamic young lady, Kim (pictured below), who was a former
foster youth in Orange County. With her intelligence, determination
and a scholarship from Orangewood’s Children Trust Fund,
she enrolled in U.C. Irvine and four years later successfully
obtained her B.A. in Social Science in 2009. After college her
goal was to pursue a Masters degree and she was accepted into
several prestigious programs. While several of the offers included
scholarship support, acceptance into her first choice, Harvard
University, did not. After hearing Kim speak at several Orangewood
fundraising events over the years and learning more about her
story, two generous Orangewood donors created the Advanced Studies
fund to help her and other students. Kim graduated in May 2010
with a Master of Education, Risk and Prevention, from Harvard
and today works in the field of social work and education in
the Boston area.
To date, Orangewood's Advanced Studies scholarships have been
awarded to 14 dynamic young adults who are proving that, given
the opportunity of a level playing field, foster youth can beat
the odds and succeed in life.
